Fancy’s on Fifth

Oysters and burgers. You really can’t go wrong with a menu like that. Fancy’s on Fifth has a great menu of oyster and burger options.

The fresh oysters come from wherever they’re in season. Blue Points are from New Jersey (and are a favorite), Rappahannocks are from Virginia, and there are even local Alabama gulf oysters.

The burger menu has offerings of the spicy chorizo El Guapo, or the Asian inspired Ramen Burger with ahi tuna and a ramen noodle bun, or for the traditionalist, there’s the Not So Fancy Burger.

For starters, the fried calamari, smoked tuna dip, or the crab fritters are worth a taste.

The full bar carries a range of craft beers, including several locals. There is a wine menu designed to please most wine lovers. The cocktail menu offers specialty drinks ranging from a champagne French 75 to the strong rum drink, Three Sheets.

The decor of Fancy’s  is based around the mascot, Octavius the Octopus. There’s a huge neon purple octopus above th bar and a statue hanging from the ceiling.

Following the theme of the Avondale neighborhood, Fancy’s on Fifth is named for the elephant, Miss Fancy, who used to reside in the Avondale Zoo, now Avondale Park. If the stories of the Prohibition era elephant are true, she would have loved the bar!

When you’re done indulging on oysters, burgers, and bar offerings, you could head upstairs to relax in the Marble Ring speakeasy.
